Baked Apple Crisp Ingredients

For a complete list with measurements, see the printable recipe card below

  • butter– adds a creaminess and crispness to the crumb topping
  • flour
  • brown sugar– sweet with a hint of molasses flavor for the topping
  • cinnamon & nutmeg– warm spices for the topping

Helpful Tips for this Recipe

  • Try to keep the apple slices uniform so that they bake evenly. Aim for thin slices (1/4 inch thickness or less) so that the fruit is fork-tender after it bakes.
  • The topping mixture will be crumbly. You might choose to use a pastry blender to help incorporate the ingredients.

How to Make Baked Apple Crisp:

  1. Before starting:

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees

    Lightly grease 2-quart casserole

  2. Wash apples; peel the skins. Then use a paring knife to halve and core the apples. Slice apples into even-sized slices, aiming for 1/4 inch thickness or less. Then place the sliced apples into a lightly greased 2-quart casserole dish.

Try to keep the slices uniform so that the apples bake evenly. Aim for thin slices so that the fruit is fork-tender after it bakes.
  3. Melt the butter in a microwaveable safe dish. Then pour it into the mixing bowl. Add the flour and stir to combine.

  4. Add the brown sugar and spices; stir to combine.

The mixture will be crumbly. You might choose to use a pastry blender to help incorporate the ingredients.
  5. Sprinkle the topping over the apples.

  6. Bake uncovered at 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until apples are fork-tender and topping is slightly crusty and brown.

  7. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm as is or with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream.

  8. Cover leftovers with foil or store in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days.

  9. To reheat, cover with aluminum foil and place in a 325 degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until heated through.

Note

I prefer Gala or Honeycrisp apples for this recipe.

Whichever apples you choose, take time to make sure they are sliced thin and uniform.

For a stronger molasses flavor, use dark brown sugar in the crumble topping.

Some food for thought....

Expand All:
Can I add raisins to this?

Sure! That would be a tasty addition. I would add 1/4-1/3 cup in with the apples. Just make sure they're covered by the crumb topping so they don't burn.

I think Gala apples are too sweet. Any suggestions?

You can use your favorite variety. Gala apples are on the sweet side. You could try Golden Delicious or even Granny Smith (which will be more tart than sweet).

Can I assemble this ahead of time and bake later?

My concern would be that the apples would turn brown. You could add a little lemon juice as a preservative and wrap the apples tightly in plastic wrap to help curb the oxidation process. I would keep the topping and apples separate until ready to bake. Aim to get it in the oven sooner rather than later.
