A modern twist on the classic Ants on a Log celery snack, Bumps on a Log is just as healthy and delicious (dare we say, even better?). Plus it's peanut-free!
Ready in just a few minutes, this savory celery snack uses two of our favorite things: roasted red pepper hummus and pretzels.
Looking for a healthy treat to prepare for the kids? Perhaps you're even looking for something to make with the kids? Well look no further! Here's a chance to show off a little kitchen creativity with a new twist on an oldie, but goodie!
This time around, the ants have marched off the log and are being replaced by bumps! Look out!
You'll want to gather the following equipment:
Prepare the celery and peppers. Trim off ends of celery sticks. Cut sticks so that they are about 3-4 inches long each. Trim pepper crowns as needed and then cut in half for easier eating. Wash and pat dry.
Yes, this is a celery snack, but sometimes it's fun to add peppers! I like using pepper crowns for this because of their indented cavities. Make sure you get all the seeds out by rinsing them before you start!
Grab your spoons and hummus. Using a small spoon, scoop out a little hummus from your container and gently fill the celery and pepper cavities.
Take out the pretzels. Place the pretzel rounds on top of the hummus. We try to evenly space them about 1/4 inch apart.
Chill for later or enjoy immediately! You will love the crunch of the celery and peppers along with the pretzels!
Store in an airtight container and refrigerate. Enjoy within one day.
The pretzel rounds will start to get soggy sitting on top of the hummus. You may wish to remove them and replace with new ones when enjoying again!
You absolutely do not have to use these for the recipe. We often have leftover pepper crowns after making stuffed peppers. We find this to be a fun and tasty way not to waste them!
My kids have never been a fan of the traditional Ants on a Log, and honestly, me neither. Hummus and pretzels are staples in our house. One day, after buying copious amounts of celery for a soup recipe, I was inspired to stuff some of our leftover stalks with hummus for a healthy celery snack. It seems that pretzels are always nearby, so we put them on top and gave it a try!
Now we enjoy Bumps on a Log, and after I make a pepper dish, Bumps on a Frog. It's simple and delicious, and a fun, quick, healthy snack enjoyed after school, or at anytime!
Roasted red pepper hummus and pretzel rounds fill celery stalks and pepper crowns. A delicious and healthy snack awaits both you and the kids! This one's so quick and easy, you can make it together!
Wash the stalks and pepper crowns and pat dry. Trim ends off of celery. Cut celery into 3-4 inch sticks. Remove pepper stems from center. Cut pepper crowns in half.
Using a small spoon, fill each celery and pepper cavity with hummus.
Place 4-5 pretzel rounds, evenly spaced, on top of the hummus.
Enjoy immediately, or cover and chill.
We like different flavors of hummus, but enjoy the roasted red pepper flavor the best with this. That being said, feel free to swap out this flavor for a different one!
Green bell peppers taste the best with this, but again, if you have a different colored pepper, give it a try! I would suggest using plain hummus with red pepper crowns.
Thank you for checking out this recipe! Enjoy!
