🎆Why These Red, White, and Blue Cookies Are The Ultimate 4th of July Treat

Sweet treats are the perfect way to capture the festive 4th of July spirit! Just like our summer Oreo Balls and 4th of July Fruit Kabobs, these bite-sized cookie cups proudly show off that patriotic theme. They feature a warm chocolate chip base topped with brightly colored holiday candies. Serving these cheerful red, white, and blue cookies is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. Everyone at your cookout will definitely return for seconds (which is why I always make at least two batches 😉!).

🍪How the Kids Can Help Assemble These 4th of July Cookie Cups

Because these cookie cups are so incredibly simple to make, it's the perfect opportunity to get the kids involved. They love being in charge of carefully pressing the colorful candy melts and M&M's right into the center of the warm dough. It's a great way to keep little hands busy while creating fun memories, and they'll be so proud to share their beautiful dessert masterpiece later!

👍The Perfect Last-Minute Dessert for a Summer Picnic

Did you get a sudden invitation to a neighborhood summer picnic? This recipe is my go-to for an effortless last minute dessert. Pre-made dough means you can quickly bake these 4th of July cookies right before leaving. They also transport beautifully in any standard food container. Your patriotic red, white, and blue cookies will arrive looking absolutely perfect!

🥘Just 4 Ingredients Needed

ingredients
  • refrigerated chocolate cookie dough - Using store-bought dough is the ultimate time-saver that ensures a soft, chewy base every time. You can use the pre-cut squares or a classic 16-ounce tube from the dairy aisle.
  • melting wafers - These are specifically designed to melt smoothly and create a glossy finish in the center of your cups. I typically use red, but you could also use blue, white, or a combination of all 3!
  • patriotic M&M's - These red, white, and blue iconic candies provide a satisfying crunch and the perfect festive look for summer. Their milk chocolate center pairs beautifully with the chocolate chip cookie base.
  • Festive sprinkles - Optional, but a fun decorative touch!

See recipe card for quantities.

  1. Step 3: Return pan to warm oven so the wafers soften and partially melt. After two minutes, remove from oven and immediately press M&M's in the center of each.

  1. Step 4: Allow to slightly cool in pan before removing and serving.

For step-by-step instructions, see the printable recipe card below.

Hint: For a perfectly filled center, press two melting wafers back-to-back and press them into the center of the cookie cup. Briefly returning the pan to the warm oven is the secret to getting that ideal melt, which ensures your candy toppings stay securely in place!

🌿Ingredient Substitutions

  • Homemade Cookie Dough - If you prefer a "from-scratch" taste, you can swap the store-bought tube for your favorite homemade chocolate chip cookie recipe. Just make sure the dough is chilled before baking so the cups hold their shape.
  • White Chocolate or Vanilla Flavored Chips - If you can’t find melting wafers, white baking chips are a great alternative for the filling. They won't be quite as glossy when they set, but they’ll taste just as delicious!
  • Patriotic Chocolate Baking Morsels - Brands like Toll House usually release bags of mixed red, white, and blue colored baking chips in early summer. Instead of a solid candy melt in the middle, you could press a small pinch of these colorful chips right into the warm center. They will partially melt and create a really inviting, gooey chocolate center.

📖Easy Cookie Cups Variations

  • Mini Egg Cookie Cups - The perfect sweet addition to your Easter spread or a quick way to satisfy that Cadbury egg craving!
  • Peanut Butter Cup Cookies - A simple two-ingredient treat featuring a soft cookie base and a rich chocolate center. They're incredibly easy to whip up for parties and can be customized with your favorite sweet toppings!
  • Raspberry Cookie Cups - Using just four simple ingredients, this recipe transforms refrigerated dough into chewy cookie shells filled with airy raspberry mousse.

🍽Essential Equipment Needed

  • silicone mini muffin pan (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) or mini muffin pan, well greased
  • wire cooling rack

🍶Storage

Store your 4th of July cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They will stay fresh for up to one week. Adding a slice of bread helps prevent dryness!

You can also freeze these treats for up to three months. Place parchment paper between the cookies to prevent sticking. Ensure the candy is fully set first before freezing.

💭Top Tip: Using The Right Muffin Pan

cookie cups in muffin pan silicone

A silicone muffin pan is a total game-changer. It allows you to pop out these 4th of July cookies without sticking. The flexible silicone lets you push gently from the bottom. This keeps your cookie cups perfectly intact. It also makes cleanup incredibly fast and easy! I highly recommend and use these silicone mini muffin pans (affiliate link) for all my cookie cup recipes.

❓4th of July Cookies FAQ

How do you get cookie cups out of a muffin pan without breaking them?

The secret to keeping your cookie cups perfectly intact is patience! You must let them cool completely in the pan before attempting to remove them. If you are using a silicone mini muffin pan, you can simply push up gently from the bottom to pop them out. If you are using a metal pan, carefully run a thin butter knife around the edges to loosen them once they have fully set.

Why did my cookie cups fall apart?

Cookie cups will fall apart if removed while warm. The store-bought dough needs time to firm up. Always let them cool entirely in the muffin tin. They will solidify and hold their adorable cup shape.

What else can I put inside cookie cups?

While this recipe uses festive candy melts and M&M's for a patriotic summer dessert, the possibilities are endless! You can easily swap the center filling for white chocolate baking chips, a mini peanut butter cup, chocolate ganache, or even a swirl of your favorite frosting.

Can I make 4th of July cookies ahead of time?

Absolutely! These 4th of July cookie cups are the perfect make-ahead summer dessert. You can bake them 1-2 days before your cookout and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. Because they use a soft chocolate chip cookie base and candy centers, they will stay perfectly fresh and chewy for your holiday picnic!

What makes these cookies patriotic?

The magic is all in the toppings! By using a simple chocolate chip cookie base and adding vibrant red, white, and blue M&M's along with bright red melting wafers, you instantly transform a classic treat into a festive, patriotic dessert that perfectly matches your 4th of July holiday theme.

How do you transport cookie cups to a summer cookout?

The best way to transport these red, white, and blue cookies is in a single layer inside a shallow, airtight container. Because the candy melt centers will firm up completely as they cool, you don't have to worry about them smudging or melting in the car on the way to your picnic!

Can I use homemade cookie dough instead of store-bought?

Yes! Refrigerated dough makes these incredibly quick and easy. However, you can absolutely substitute your favorite homemade recipe. Just chill your homemade dough for 30 minutes before baking. This helps your cookie cups hold their shape!

  • Place one cookie dough portion inside of each muffin cup. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until edges are slightly golden brown and cookies are puffy/slightly dented in the center.
  • Remove pan from oven; place on wire rack. Turn off oven.

Notes

A silicone muffin pan is a total game-changer for these cookies because it allows you to pop them out without any sticking. Since the centers are soft, the flexible silicone lets you gently push from the bottom to release each treat perfectly. This keeps your cookie cups intact and looking professional while making the cleanup process incredibly fast and easy.
