Celebrate America with these super easy, incredibly delicious, Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Strawberries! It’s what the Founding Fathers would have wanted.

About 10 years ago, I got tired of spending a ridiculous amount of money on Chocolate Covered Strawberries from the grocery store (seriously, why are 4 of them now like $12?- sheesh!).

With just a few ingredients and barely any effort, dipping things in melted chocolate is not only so much more economical, it’s also easy and fun!

Plus, you can totally make it your own because there really are no rules. I’ve dipped fruit and plenty of berries, but I’ve also coated potato chips, a variety of pretzels, gummy fish, gummy bears–and more in chocolate!

Everything’s better with chocolate, right?

These Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Strawberries are a summer favorite in our house. I like using vanilla flavored (white) melting wafers so that the red, white and blue stars really pop.

As George Washington once allegedly said, There’s no better way to celebrate American independence than by eating Chocolate Dipped Strawberries! They were a thing back then, right? Well if not, I’m sure he celebrated by eating something sweet and tasty.

Why You’ll Love It

Super simple recipe- In order to make Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Strawberries, you only need to buy 3 ingredients–that’s it! This is a dip-dip process. You simply melt the wafers in your microwave, dip the berries in it, dip them again in sprinkles and then chill them for an hour in the fridge!

Crowd pleaser- Everyone loves things dipped in chocolate–especially berries. And if they don’t, I feel sorry for them (but that also means more for me)!

Versatile- We’re going for a summer vibe with this recipe, but it’s incredibly easy to switch out the color of the melting wafers and sprinkles to make these chocolate dipped strawberries fit in with any holiday or theme.

Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Strawberries Ingredients

For a list with measurements, see the printable recipe card below

  • fresh, firm, large strawberries- it’s incredibly important that you choose strawberries with no bruises or soft spots to coat; I suggest buying two packages and choose the best of the best in each
  • premium white vanilla flavored melting wafers- you can also use bark; don’t skimp on the quality here and avoid using baking chips, which have a waxy coating
  • red, white and blue sprinkles- stock up on these early in the season…by mid summer they’re hard to find in stores and you’ll pay a fortune for them online!

How to Make Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

For a detailed set of instructions, see the printable recipe card below

  1. Rinse and dry berries; set up your dipping station and pan.
  2. Melt wafers at 50 % power in microwave in 30 second intervals until almost smooth. Stir any remaining clumps with a spoon before dipping berries.
  3. Dip the berries, one at time, into the melted wafer mixture and rotate to coat; then immediately dip in sprinkles.
  4. Carefully place decorated berry on prepared pan. Repeat for remaining berries.
  5. Once finished, place the pan in your refrigerator for 1 hour, then enjoy!

Helpful Tips for this Recipe

  • Do not overheat the wafers! They will end up drying out and getting very sticky if you overdo it.
  • Have your dipping station and pan ready to go before you melt the wafers (once they’re done melting, they start to solidify again).
  • Buy double the amount of strawberries needed so you can pick out the best ones!

How to Make Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Strawberries:

  1. Before starting:

Line baking sheet with parchment/wax paper

    Wash and pat dry strawberries

Push corn on the cob holders into tops of berries (optional)

    Place sprinkles in small bowl

  2. Place wafers in microwaveable safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, but leave a little opening for venting. Microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds. Gently pull away part of plastic wrap and stir. Cover as before and return the bowl to the microwave only if needed. Heat for an additional 15 seconds and stir.

I can't stress this enough...do not overheat these wafers! They will end up drying out and getting very sticky if you overdo it. I usually find that after following the above, all they need is a little stir. It's better to have a few lumps and clumps that you can stir to smooth than overdoing it in the microwave!
  3. Set up your "dipping station" by placing the melted wafer bowl and the sprinkles bowl side by side. Have the large pan (lined with parchment paper) very close by.

  4. Dip the berries, one at time, following these simple steps:

Push each berry about halfway into the melted wafer bowl and rotate to coat

Then immediately dip into sprinkles bowl (you need to do this step right away before the chocolate starts to set)

    Carefully place on prepared pan

  5. Once finished, place the pan in your refrigerator for 1 hour, then enjoy!

  6. Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated. Enjoy within 3 days.

Note

Stick to premium melting wafers. Store brands aren't as flavorful and tend to have more of an oily consistency. Avoid using baking chips, which aren't intended for melting and dipping.

Always keep Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Strawberries refrigerated until ready to enjoy or serve.

Some food for thought....

Expand All:
Wow, that's a lot of sprinkles! Do I have to use that many?

Absolutely not! My family really enjoys sprinkles, so I have a heavy hand with them. Feel free to use the amount you desire.

Can I make these with milk chocolate melting wafers?

Yes, of course! Use the chocolate you like best. I think the colors pop on the white, but if you prefer a different chocolate, that's fine.

Can I use frozen strawberries for this?

Unfortunately, no. Frozen strawberries are extremely watery and mushy. You have to use fresh, firm berries for this that aren't overripe.
