Bumps on a Log is a savory celery snack perfect for kids after school, featuring hummus and crunchy pretzels. A twist on the classic Ants on a Log, this peanut-free version is healthier and more delicious (dare we say, even better?). Plus it's ready in just a few minutes.

bumps on a log

With protein-rich hummus and hydrating, low calorie celery sticks, this savory stuffed celery recipe is the perfect healthy snack.

Simply use my Best Homemade Hummus, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, or your favorite store-bought brand to fill celery and optional bell pepper crowns, then top with sea salt pretzel rounds. It's seriously that simple.

Kids like helping to make this snack, which is lower in fat and calories than the traditional Ants on a Log (with peanut butter and raisins). It's also a great option for classroom parties since it's peanut-free.

We call this Bumps on a Log to be funny, but it's actually appropriately descriptive...don't you think?

🥘Ingredients

ingredients
  • Celery Sticks (the logs)
  • Pepper Crowns (the frogs, caterpillars, stegosauruses or whatever you envision!)--optional, but extra fun!
  • Hummus- flavored hummus provides added flavor
  • Snyder's Pretzel Rounds (Sea Salt Flavor)

See recipe card for quantities.

🔪Instructions

stuffed with hummus
  1. Step 1: Slice celery sticks (and optional pepper crowns) so they are 3-4 inches long. Use a small spoon to fill with hummus.
pretzels added
  1. Step 2: Place the pretzel rounds on top, roughly ¼ inch apart.

Hint: Place the pretzels on just before serving. They will eventually get soggy on top of the hummus.

🥣Substitutions

Pretzels: Some readers have shared that it's difficult finding pretzel rounds. The best alternative is using mini pretzels. Stick the pretzels halfway into the hummus so the two top bumps stick out the top.

Hummus: Use your favorite hummus flavor. Our favorites for this stuffed celery snack are Best Homemade Hummus and Roasted Red Pepper Hummus.

📖Variations

We realize the following options aren't as healthy, but they're fun and oh so tasty.

Bumps on a snowy log: Instead of hummus, use cream cheese.

Bumps on a sandy log: Instead of hummus, use a spreadable cheese.

Bumps on a muddy log: Instead of hummus, use Nutella.

🍽Equipment

  • cutting board
  • chef's knife
  • plates and spoons

🍶Storage

Store Bumps on a Log in an airtight container and refrigerate. Enjoy within one day.

Remove the pretzels before storing so they don't get soggy.

💭Top tip

Ensure celery stalks and pepper cavities are completely dry before filling, so the filling sticks.

🗨️FAQ

Is celery and hummus a healthy snack?

Yes! Made from chickpeas, hummus contains protein and fiber. Hummus is calorie dense though, so not over stuffing the celery sticks is advised. Celery contains fiber and water, and is a good source of Vitamin K.

Ingredients

  • 4 celery stalks (the logs) cut in half for 8 total; each stick should be 3-4 inches long
  • 4 green bell pepper crowns (the frogs, caterpillars, etc.) great to use if you have on hand, otherwise use a few more stalks of celery if desired
  • 1 cup store bought or homemade hummus the amount might be a little more than you need, but depending on how deep the pepper crowns are, this ensures that you have enough
  • 1 cup pretzel rounds (the bumps) sea salt flavor

Instructions

  • Wash the stalks and pepper crowns and thoroughly dry. Trim ends off of celery. Cut celery into 3-4 inch sticks. Remove pepper stems from center. Cut pepper crowns in half.
  • Using a small spoon, fill each celery and pepper cavity with hummus.
  • Place 4-5 pretzel rounds, evenly spaced, on top of the hummus.
  • Enjoy immediately, or cover and chill.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 1 day. Keep refrigerated and remove pretzels before storing.

Notes

Make sure the celery and peppers are completely dry before stuffing them. The hummus sticks better this way.
We like different flavors of hummus, but enjoy the roasted red pepper flavor the best with this.
Place the pretzels on just before serving so they don't get soggy.
