It doesn't get much better than a good old-fashioned apple pie--especially when you put a sweet brown sugar crumble on top! Filled with sweet, juicy apples, Dutch Apple Crumb Pie bakes to perfection in under an hour and is ready to become your next pie obsession.

Because it doesn't have a lattice topping, this tasty apple crumb pie is a breeze to put together--especially when you use a premade, store-bought crust.

Most of the work for this recipe is peeling, coring and slicing the apples for the filling (just like for Baked Apple Crisp and Apple Peanut Crunch), and let's be honest, that really isn't much of a bother when you get a delicious dessert in return.

With warm cinnamon spice and sweet, juicy apple flavor, this delicious apple pie is savored down to the last forkful. And that tasty, sweet and buttery crumb topping only sweetens the deal, causing this pie to never stick around for long!

🥘Ingredients

For a complete list with measurements, see the printable recipe card below

  • frozen deep dish pie crust- buy frozen to save time; a deep dish crust is essential to hold all the goodness inside
  • peeled, cored and sliced apples- I prefer Wild Twist or Honeycrisp for this recipe, but feel free to use your favorite variety
  • sugar, flour, cinnamon & nutmeg- the delicious ingredients that create such a great sugar-spiced syrup for the pie
  • flour, butter & brown sugar- the three tasty ingredients in the crumb topping

🔪Instructions

For a more detailed instructions, see the printable recipe card below

Hint: Before filling the thawed pie crust, place it on a baking sheet lined with foil. The pie is much easier to take in and out of the oven this way.

🥣Substitutions

Feel free to use your favorite apple variety. Popular choices for baking are Granny Smith (tart) and Honeycrisp (sweet).

📖Variations

The filling in this pie also works for a traditional apple pie with a pastry crust and lattice topping.

🍽Equipment

  • paring knife
  • fruit/vegetable peeler
  • cutting board
  • large mixing bowl
  • small mixing bowl
  • mixing spoon
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • baking sheet, lined with foil
  • pastry cutter (optional, but helpful for the topping)

🍶Storage

Cover with foil and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Enjoy leftovers right out of the fridge, or cover loosely with aluminum foil and reheat at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

💭Top Tip

When slicing the apples, keep the thickness uniform so that they bake evenly in the pie. Aim for thin slices (¼ inch thickness or less) so the pie filling is fork-tender after it bakes.

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen deep dish pie crust thawed
  • 4 cups peeled, cored and sliced apples about 4-5 medium/large apples
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup flour
  • 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter softened
  • ¼ cup firmly packed light brown sugar

Instructions

  • Before starting:
    Preheat oven to 400 ℉
Thaw frozen pie crust on counter (this can be done while prepping the apples in next step)
    Soften butter on counter
  • Wash apples and peel the skins. Then use a paring knife to halve and core the apples. Slice apples into even-sized slices, aiming for ⅛ inch thickness or less in each slice. Then set them momentarily aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, 2 T. flour, cinnamon and nutmeg; mix well.
  • Add apple slices and mix until apples are evenly coated.
  • Spoon mixture into thawed pie shell. Place on a baking sheet lined with foil and set aside.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the remaining ½ c. flour, softened butter and brown sugar until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle topping over apples.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes, or until crumb topping is slightly browned.
  • Allow pie to cool for 1 hour before serving.
  • Cover any leftovers with foil and refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Enjoy leftovers right out of the fridge, or cover loosely with aluminum foil and reheat at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

Notes

I prefer Wild Twist or Honeycrisp apples for this recipe.
Whichever apple you choose, take time to make sure they are sliced thin and uniform.
Be sure to bake the pie on a baking sheet lined with foil for easier handling and for easier clean up.

I have always made the "traditional" type of apple pie and you're right...this way is so much easier. The topping is delicious and we loved this pie with vanilla ice cream and a cup of coffee.

I agree, and I think that apple crumb pies have more flavor because of that easy topping!
