Nothing says fall like this delicious Baked Apple Crisp! From its buttery, sugar-spiced crumbly top, down to the sweet and juicy apples underneath, this is such a scrumptious treat!

baked apple crisp

Just thinking about apples right now has me craving Dutch Apple Crumb Pie, Apple Peanut Crunch and Apple Cinnamon Kuchen. And I know why. Each of these desserts have something great in common: they all have fresh, baked apples nestled under a tremendously tasty topping.

Baked Apple Crisp might secretly be my favorite though. It's so easy to make and tastes so delicious! There's no crust to contend with and no tricky mixing or layers. It's just a good old-fashioned, wholesome recipe full of fresh apple flavor.

Ingredients

For a complete list with measurements, see the printable recipe card below

  • Sliced, pared and cored apples- I like Gala or Honeycrisp for this for their sweetness, especially since the apples don't get mixed with sugar in this recipe
  • butter- adds a creaminess and crispness to the crumb topping
  • flour
  • brown sugar- sweet with a hint of molasses flavor for the topping
  • cinnamon & nutmeg- warm spices for the topping

Instructions

For a more detailed set of instructions, see the printable recipe card below

Helpful tips

  • Try to keep the apple slices uniform so that they bake evenly. Aim for thin slices (¼ inch thickness or less) so that the fruit is fork-tender after it bakes.
  • The topping mixture will be crumbly. You might choose to use a pastry blender to help incorporate the ingredients.

Equipment

  • fruit/vegetable peeler
  • paring knife
  • cutting board
  • 2 quart casserole dish, lightly greased
  • microwaveable safe dish
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • mixing spoon

Storage

Cover with foil or store in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days.

To reheat, cover with aluminum foil and place in a 325 degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until heated through.

Instructions

  • Before starting:
    Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  • Melt the butter in a microwaveable safe dish. Then pour it into the mixing bowl. Add the flour and stir to combine.
  • Add the brown sugar and spices; stir to combine.
  • Sprinkle the topping over the apples.

  • To reheat, cover with aluminum foil and place in a 325 degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until heated through.

Notes

I prefer Gala or Honeycrisp apples for this recipe.
Whichever apples you choose, take time to make sure they are sliced thin and uniform.
For a stronger molasses flavor, use dark brown sugar in the crumble topping.
