Holidays get busy--fast. That's why quick and easy cookie recipes like this one come in so handy.

These cute melted snowmen cookies may look fancy, but they are so easy to put together. Buy store cookies and a few key essentials, then gather your kitchen helpers.

The cookies are decorated one at a time before the white cookie icing sets. When you have at least one helper, this fun and easy recipe comes together in just 30 minutes!

assembled

It doesn't get much easier--or cuter--than a melted snowman cookie. Just look at those sweet and soft marshmallow heads! With shoestring licorice scarves and mini M&Ms buttons, these eye-catching cookies are practically begging for attention!

Melted snowman cookies get raves from both kids and adults---and just like Christmas Butter Cookies and Christmas Bark, they always fly off the cookie tray.

🥘Ingredients

ingredients
  • large marshmallows- these are cut in half for the heads
  • black edible marker- for the eyes; I got mine from Amazon; if you can't find this, use black decorating gel or mini chocolate chips
  • orange sprinkles- for the nose; we literally just pick these out of leftover fall sprinkle mixes that we have in the cupboard
  • store bought cookies- I use Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Thin and Crispy Butter Crisp Cookies (14 count); choose a cookie that's flat and wide (at least 2-3 inches across); another popular choice is store bakery undecorated sugar cookies, which tend to be larger
  • white cookie icing- I like Wilton because it comes in a squeeze tub; it's important to use cookie icing because it sets fast
  • silver sprinkles- for a glittery, shimmery effect (like snow!)
  • individual (pulled apart) shoestring licorice strands- for the scarves; you can use decorating gel instead, but I find the licorice easier to work with
  • mini M&Ms- for the buttons; you can use sparkle gel instead

See recipe card for quantities.

🔪Instructions

decorated heads
  1. Step 1: Using kitchen shears, cut the marshmallows in half lengthwise; use edible marker to dot on eyes; press orange sprinkle in for nose.
head and icing
  1. Step 2: Squirt cookie icing onto cookie; add silver sprinkles and then press head, sticky side down, toward the back of the cookie.
scarf and sprinkles
  1. Step 3: Wrap licorice around the head and allow to lay in the icing.
candy buttons
  1. Step 4: Press on candy buttons.

Hint: I find it helpful to make the crisscross with the licorice before placing it over the marshmallow head; if you feel that the "scarf" is too long, wait until after the cookie sets to trim it with kitchen shears.

📖Variations

  • With earmuffs - use mini gumdrops or regular sized M&Ms and place one of each side of the marshmallow head (use cookie icing as glue); draw a line across the top of the marshmallow with an edible marker or use decorating gel to "connect" the earmuffs
  • With arms - if you use a big enough cookie (3 inches or larger), you'll have room for arms; use an edible marker or decorating gel to draw/make them on either side of the buttons; you can also use thin pretzel sticks
  • With hats - upside down mini Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or Rolos make cute snowman hats; use black decorating gel to make a circle (brim) on top of the head; then place the candy on top

See Christmas Bark for another easy recipe that kids can help with.

🍽Equipment

  • parchment paper
  • kitchen shears
  • cookie rack

🍶Storage

Store Melted Snowman Cookies in an airtight container. Enjoy within 7 days. Do not refrigerate or freeze.

It's best not to have cookies overlap when storing; if you need to for space reasons, make sure they are fully dry and place layers of parchment paper in between.

💭Top tips

Decorate the cookies one at a time (not in an assembly line) so you can work with the wet icing before it sets.

Choose a hard cookie for this recipe. As the assembled cookies sit, they soften because they absorb some of the icing.
